Vivid Color Nature Photography
by John Houtman
The Florida Panhandle extends from Pensacola in the west to Tallahassee and St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in the east. Along this stretch of approximately 250 miles, a myriad of beautiful locations for photography abound. All along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, there are white sand beaches with beautiful emerald water, wetlands, shorebirds and wading birds, reptiles and amphibians, and wildflowers and song birds.
I've photographed near the shorelines at Destin, Panama City Beach, St. Andrews State Park, Tyndall Air Force Base, Mexico Beach, St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, and Alligator Point. I've gone inland into the Apalachicola National Forest, Wakulla Springs State Park, and St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge to photograph wildlife, wildflowers and scenery.
One of my most memorable moments as a nature photographer was in St. Andrews State Park one April morning. I went into the edge of a wetlands viewing area before dawn. As the sun came up, the loud cacophony of wildlife greeting the dawning sun was awe inspiring. Every creature in the marsh was calling to the world to celebrate their nesting and their young. There were Great, Cattle and White Egret, Great Blue, Green-backed and Blue Heron, American Alligator and bullfrogs, and song birds of several varieties. It was one of those mornings when all was well in the world.
